Objetivos del Curso
The course objectives are to help students:
In this course, special emphasis is placed on the use of authentic source materials and the integration of language skills. Therefore, students will receive extensive training in combining listening, reading, and speaking (or listening, reading, and writing) skills in order to demonstrate understanding of authentic Spanish-language source materials.
Materiales
1) Spanish-English Dictionary (Recommended)
2) Pens, Pencils and Paper
3) One three-ring binder
4) If you have your own electronic device, you may bring it also (be aware of policies about it).
Course Description
The course encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition, emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication.
Participation
The student will be expected to work from BELL to BELL. The student will not leave the classroom until dismissed by the teacher.
Class expectations:
1. Be prepared
Have all your class work and materials ready BEFORE coming into class.
2. Be courteous
Do not distract anyone during class. Ask permission before leaving your seat. If something isn't yours, leave it alone.
3. Be responsible
Be honest. Accept the consequences to your actions. Follow instructions. Do your work. Follow the class procedures.
4. Be a participant
Take an active role in participating correctly during class.
Grades:
There will be six grades per six weeks - on average one per week. These grades are based on the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages' three modes of communication. There will be 2 Interpersonal, 2 Interpretive and 2 Presentational grades per six weeks. We will be going over each and every mode and what is expected from the students.
Homework
There will be no homework per se in this class. However, if there is a presentation due, a project due, etc. there will be work to be done at home and away from the class.
Retakes (for students who failed an assignment)
As per departmental and district policy, the retake must be after 24 hours and within a week of the quiz (calendar week) during tutorials or FIT. Student must be prepared to justify the new answers given. The teacher will assign the higher grade of the two to the student.
Make up Work
It is the student's responsibility to check the webpage first and before asking the teacher for the make up work when absent for any reason. As per school and district policy, the student will have two days per absence to complete the make up work. No credit will be awarded after three days.

As much as I realize Bowie students are outstanding in every way, there are consequences to distracting / unacceptable actions:
Electronic devices
As per student handbook, Electronic device use during the instructional period will be according to teacher discretion. A student may use an electronic device such as smart phone, computer or tablet only if no computers are available and with the teacher's permission only. If a student is caught using their device for other than school use (ie, texting, email, calling home, non school related websites, etc) the device will be picked up and won't be returned until the end of the day. A second time will mean the device turned into the office and the student will not be allowed to use the device in class.
Parents/Guardians, please, if you need to contact your child during school time contact the office and have them contact your student.
Students, if you need to call home for any reason, you may use the class phone.

- understand Spanish spoken by native speakers at a natural pace, with a variety of regional pronunciations, in both informal (interpersonal) and formal (presentational) contexts;

- express themselves by describing, narrating, inquiring, and developing arguments in Spanish, both orally and in writing, with reasonable fluency, using different strategies for different audiences and communicative contexts (presentational).

Other notes:
- No grooming of any kind is allowed in class. This includes brushing / combing hair, make up, perfumes and lotion.
- Distracting objects such as toys, make-up, etc. may and will be picked up and returned at the teacher’s discretion.
- Teacher is available for Tutoring / Help from 8:15 AM until 8:45 AM - Monday through Thursday in the classroom (A213). Teacher will also assign FIT when needed or any student is able to sign up for a FIT session with their teacher in order to get more help.
- Tardy means NOT being in the classroom when the tardy bell begins to ring. No hall permits will be allowed the first 15 and the last 15 minutes of class. As per school policy, any student late after 15 minutes will be considered absent.
As much as I realize Bowie students are outstanding in every way, there are consequences to distracting / unacceptable actions:
- Warning by teacher (visual, verbal or a conversation).
- Sent to another classroom during class.
- Detention (to be paid before school): 15 minutes increments.
- Phone call home.
- Referrals and trips to the office are always an option.
- Athletes, please, be aware that your teacher can and will call your coach at any time.
