Textbook
Buen Viaje, level 1 - online edition.

 Objetivos del Curso
The course objectives are to help students:
  • understand Spanish spoken by native speakers at a natural pace, with a variety of regional pronunciations, in both informal (interpersonal) and formal (presentational) contexts;
  • develop an active vocabulary sufficient for reading newspaper and magazine articles, contemporary literature, and other non-technical writings (websites, letters and emails, advertisements, signs and instructions) in Spanish without dependence on a dictionary;
  • express themselves by describing, narrating, inquiring, and developing arguments in Spanish, both orally and in writing, with reasonable fluency, using different strategies for different audiences and communicative contexts.

In this course, special emphasis is placed on the use of authentic source materials and the integration of language skills. Therefore, students will receive extensive training in combining listening, reading, and speaking (or listening, reading, and writing) skills in order to demonstrate understanding of authentic Spanish-language source materials.

Materiales

1)  Pens, Pencils and Paper
2) One three-ring binder

Course Description: The course encompasses aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar, and composition, emphasizing the use of Spanish for active communication.

Participation: The student will be expected to work from BELL to BELL.  The student will not leave the classroom until dismissed by the teacher.

Homework: Homework, when assigned, will have a direct connection to what is being covered in class. If and when there is homework it is due at the beginning of the class period on the designated date.

Exams and Quizzes: The
tests are not based on specific course content, but instead attempt to evaluate levels of performance in the use of the language, both in understanding written and spoken Spanish, and in writing and speaking with ease in Spanish.

Class expectations:

1. Be prepared

Have all your class work and materials ready BEFORE coming into class.

2. Be courteous
Do not distract anyone during class. Ask permission before leaving your seat. If something isn’t yours, leave it alone.

3. Be responsible

Be honest. Accept the consequences to your actions. Follow instructions. Do your work. Follow the class procedures.

4. Be a participant
Take an active role in participating correctly during class.

Trabajo diario
Every student begins the week with a 100 for Daily Work. At the end of the week, any infraction committed is multiplied by 5 and subtracted from the 100 for the Daily Work grade for the week.

In order to keep the 100, every student is expected to:

  1. Be seated and working when the tardy bell rings.
  2. Participate the entire period - students are expected to work from bell to bell.
  3. Complete daily class tasks.
  4. Work well with partner and/or group to maximize practice time.
  5. Bring materials to class every day.

Grades:

Trabajo Independiente         30%
Quizzes                                       45%              Project: 20 points off per day late.
Exam                                  25%            One exam – at the end of the six weeks.

Other notes:

  • No grooming of any kind is allowed in class. This includes brushing / combing hair, make up, perfumes and lotion.
  • Distracting objects such as toys, make-up, and all portable electronic devices will be picked up and returned at the teacher’s discretion.
  • When absent, every student is expected to check the class website first. Then, if there are any questions, you may ask the teacher for clarification before or after school.
  • Teacher is available for Tutoring / Help from 8:15 AM until 8:45 AM - Monday through Thursday in the classroom (A213).
  • Tardy means NOT being in the classroom when the tardy bell begins to ring. All tardy students are expected to remain in the classroom for 3 minutes after the bell (there is a 10 minute hall passing period). No hall permits will be allowed the first 15 and the last 15 minutes of class.

Consequences:

As much as I realize Bowie students are outstanding in every way, there are consequences to distracting / unacceptable actions:

  1. Warning by teacher.
  2. Sent to another classroom to work.
  3. Detention (to be paid before school): 15 minutes increments.
  4. Phone call home.
  5. Referrals and trips to the office are always an option.
  6. Athletes, please, be aware that your teacher can and will call your coach at any time.
